7 reasons Catenarian Chronicles is a standout dark fantasy

Catenarian Chronicles will be the most unique dark paranormal fantasy you’ll ever read. Why? It’s not typical genre fiction.

I hate writing genre fiction. When I started writing, I used to say, “Okay, this one’s for the mass market aaaand it’s not.” My mind wouldn’t conform to typical genre formulas, so I said “screw it” when I got to Cursed Mage and the Catenarian Chronicles.

Still, I wanted this one to resemble pure genre fiction, so it throws a lot of paranormal elements fused with a disturbing story in your face. If you’re a dark fantasy lover, it’s gonna be bleak enough for you.

But that doesn’t mean the series didn’t forge its own path. If you get through this list and you’re still interested in checking out Catenarian Chronicles, you’re an open-minded critical thinker who doesn’t need to read the same damn story every 20 minutes.

Or, if you’re already interested…

1 – Mass surveillance dystopia disguised as dark fantasy

If you’re a genre-first reader, Catenarian Chronicles will disappoint you. There are mass surveillance dystopian concepts all over the goddamn place, starting with tracking devices on watch phones, undercover agents who’ll throw people who claim to possess supernatural ability into “institutions,” and a group of elitists known as Mages hiding in plain sight to keep a close eye on the non-Mage masses.

2 – Political themes are front and center

If you haven’t met me, know that I’m a loose cannon who’s not subtle about his strong political themes. A lot of authors are, and it’s why I write something different. If you’re a libertarian, you’re in for a treat, since I’m railing against mass surveillance and State encroachment into our everyday lives.

3 – The series isn’t completely hopeless and that’s a good thing

I love dark fantasy, but I hate how it’s often so fucking hopeless. That’s why I forged a different path, so readers like me aren’t subjected to doom and gloom. Are you in the same boat? Then be rest assured: Catenarian Chronicles has its fair share of light moments.

4 – It embraces strong females without the “girl boss” nonsense

Girl bosses are the bane of my existence. Luckily, Catenarian Chronicles goes without them. That said, you’re getting a strong female protagonist and a laundry list of badass female supporting characters. If you like attractive women who bite and fight back without the ridiculous “girl boss” trope, this dark paranormal fantasy series is for you.

5 – Sci-fi tech doesn’t go to the wayside in ancient castles

Just because part of Catenarian Chronicles takes place in a castle doesn’t mean I’m doing away with the hi-tech background noise. There are surveillance cameras all over the place, electricity, WiFi, and your typical modern-day conveniences. Oh, and some will use that tech for sinister purposes.

6 – It’s in a shared universe

Catenarian Chronicles is in the Renegades Epic shared universe. There are five other series in the universe, with each diving into different genres of fantasy and even subgenres all across the fictional landscape. You’ll find characters in those works making appearances here, and you might just see Kaija hop into other series.

7 – Catenarian Chronicles loves to subgenre-hop

Cursed Mage, a dark paranormal fantasy by TC MartiCursed Mage? New adult college fantasy—no, wait a minute—dystopian fantasy thriller. Wait, is that a castle? An ancient one? So, now we’re heading into epic fantasy, right? Nope, because TC said earlier that 22nd-century tech ain’t going anywhere.

If you don’t mind books that mix and match genres, Catenarian Chronicles will be your forte. It’s a dark paranormal fantasy before anything else, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing in its bag of tricks. Genre-fusion is my specialty, and Catenarian Chronicles drives it home.

Want proof? Check out Cursed Mage right now at The Rebel Lore Vault, and brace yourself for about five different subgenres of fiction. I’ll leave you to tally ’em up.
