Appearance and Bio

Sion Zona possesses a lean, muscular build, dark brown and wavy hair, hazel eyes, and a fierce resting face. He stands at five feet, five inches in height, and weighs between 145 and 150lb.

Sion is the main protagonist in Elementals of Nordica, and as mentioned, the title of each book plays on his wind-wielding ability. He is named directly after my freelance writing pen name, Sion Fawkes. His surname,  Zona,  is a nod to the State of Arizona, the home state of my favorite sports teams, the Arizona Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Coyotes, and Phoenix Suns.

Sion has a bit of a Napoleon Complex because of his small size and his shoot first, ask questions later personality. Despite this, he never intended to confront Tamurian soldiers during the Iron Town riots, although he planned on making a run for it and would have, in turn, become a fugitive for evading the conscription lottery that kicked off the riots.

Sion grew up with his cousins Erno, Timo, and Hannah Kakko, related to him on his maternal side as his aunt, Issa Kakko, is his mother’s younger sister. Not much is known about Sion’s father, Loki, except he escaped from Tamurian-controlled Northern Regions over two decades before the events in Elementals of Nordica.

Sion is also a gifted thrashball player – a sport that combines elements from Association, American, Australian football, and rugby. A passing specialist center, Sion is the “quarterback” of his thrashball team, despite his small size. However, his grit, confidence that sometimes borders on cockiness, and leadership abilities have won teammates over at Syndergaard.

At the beginning of the series, Sion’s best friend and girlfriend is Liri Viorunen, whose father, Tyr, was best friends with Loki during their college days.

Despite his relationship status, Sion is quite immature. He often flirts with other women to the point one can consider him to be cheating. Liri also catches him looking often and isn’t afraid to call him out on it. Sion’s immaturity is a negative character trait that shows itself in Wind Wielder. He’s also self-righteous and borderline hypocritical.

I based Sion mainly on myself physique-wise. We also (almost) share a birth date – mine is April 27th. Personality-wise, I based Sion on fictional characters like James Potter, Sirius Black, James “Sawyer” Ford (Lost), and Jess Ballard (World of the Gateway).

What Makes Sion Zona Interesting?

Far too often, I find protagonists to have the odds stacked against them every which way. This isn’t the case with Sion. He’s popular, a college athlete, and possesses exceptional talent in his wind-wielding ability. As an elemental, he knows what he is and isn’t afraid to show it off. Despite his cocky personality, he also gets on excellent with his aunt, uncle, and cousins, especially Hannah, even if the latter isn’t afraid to call him out on his BS.

However, like many protagonists, Sion also has a tragic past. He lost both of his parents before his first memories. And like most protagonists in works that feature epic fantasy tropes, there is a lot about Sion that he doesn’t know. He boasts legendary significance. Unfortunately for Sion, he scoffs at legends and anything relegated to myth.

Sion isn’t necessarily the kind of protagonist you will feel sorry for early in the series. But he’s also the type that you will root for. Especially since Lord Tuukka has already discovered his significance, and he’s ready to get rid of everything Sion’s ever accomplished before he seeks to kill him outright.
