Beyond the Lost Assault’s ultimate beta male: Goodwin
There is no greater beta male out there than Goodwin. From the moment Quinn Cozens meets him, it’s clear that Goodwin will enforce anything, even if it’s wrong.

If Martin Richards is the colony alpha, Goodwin’s the ultimate beta. He’ll carry out any order Martin gives him. If it meant unfairly killing someone, Goodwin’s only too glad to bow down to and complete the dirty deed.
Part of Goodwin enjoys his role as an enforcer. His ultimate goal? To land a seat on Martin’s council and throw his weight around. Goodwin is living proof that the colony, even one as “Christian” as Martin proclaims, is rotten to the core.
He also uses psychological tactics. In Beyond the Lost Assault, Goodwin loves targeting Quinn Cozens. He deliberately tries baiting Quinn into more than mistakes. In one part of the book, Quinn fantasizes about killing Goodwin. This makes Quinn more flawed than he is. Yet since Goodwin gets personal with Quinn, even the most restrained person would have a tough time holding themselves back.
The ultimate beta male in Goodwin is the absolute worst
It’s hard to tell whether Goodwin has any real values. Would he do what the alpha tells him if this colony were full of Satanists? You wouldn’t put it past him.
So, who inspired this character, exactly? Go back to one of my favorite TV shows ABC’s Lost, and you’ll catch the gist of it. Two characters — one of them named Goodwin and another named Ethan — take the torch. Goodwin and Ethan were both “Others” sent to spy on the survivors of Oceanic 815.
As for the “character casting?” I always pictured him as Josh Holloway, who played Sawyer on Lost. His personality, demeanor, and relentless cocky side makes him very, very Sawyer-like. And it wouldn’t surprise me an iota if he made a living as a con man once upon a time.
