A wide cinematic digital painting capturing the dark-mystical tone of the Catenarian Chronicles. Snow-dusted gothic ruins rise against a twilight sky, tangled with spectral vines and rune-etched stone archways. In the foreground, a solitary young mage in a hooded cloak stands with their back to the viewer, holding faint silver-blue spirit flame in their hand. Ethereal silhouettes drift and whisper in the mist — ghostly figures hinting at unseen mentors and unseen enemies. Subtle elemental runes glow faintly within the fog. The atmosphere should feel eerie, enchanted, and secretive — a world full of hidden connections and Easter eggs waiting to be discovered. High detail, soft cinematic lighting, moody winter palette.

Catenarian Chronicles subtly links to the Renegades Epic

The Catenarian Chronicles may be the “outlier” in the Renegades Epic as it reads like a single series. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t connections.

While my dark paranormal fantasy series Catenarian Chronicles stands on its own, there are still numerous links to the broader Renegades Epic shared universe it finds itself in. But unlike the more blatant connections you will find in my other series, this one’s connections come in the form of Easter Eggs.

If you haven’t read Cursed Mage, Book I in the Catenarian Chronicles, then don’t worry, I won’t share any deal-breaking spoilers in this article. Maybe a few hints, but nothing you wouldn’t see coming, especially since we’re zoning in on Book II in the series, Astray Mage.

Ditto for if you haven’t read any series in the Epic, but are keen on checking it out. So, expect some mystery here, and if you find any of it confusing, then buy some of my books and you won’t be confused so much. It’s that easy.

Anyway, let’s get to it.

Easter eggs in Book II of Catenarian Chronicles, Astray Mage

Spirits have mentors

In Astray Mage, the spirit of a little girl plays a major supporting role and will be a bona-fide fan favorite. Because she died at such a young age, she sought guidance from a spirit who had more life experience.

That spirit also controlled and mastered the Element of Spirit in life. In this shared universe, Spirit is one of the elemental disciplines some characters wield in life, and continue to influence after death.

That gave this little girl a good guide to work with. Ironically, the little girl had been dead and in spirit form longer. But since she never controlled the Element of Spirit in the same way as her mentor, it put that mentor ahead of the eight ball. The mentor in question was a flesh and blood character in my series Elementals of Nordica.

The off-screen antagonists

Astray Mage has its antagonists who Kaija and Company fight with. But the real “bad guys,” or, “bad girls,” are off-screen, only mentioned in the work.

Both antagonists appear in different series; one in Cymraeg Tales and the other in Sentrys of Terrene. If you read those two series, I’ll give you a hint for who they might be: I based one on the Winter Soldier from MCU, and the other on Darth Sidious from Star Wars, except that they’re both female.

The unseen supporting character

In Cursed and Astray Mage, there’s one unseen character who’s mentioned but never shown. You’ll find out a little about them, and you’ll hear of them just enough to hold your interest, or so you won’t forget about them.

But if you read Chronicles of Rondure, you’ll already have met them. No, they’re not a main or even a supporting character. They only make a cameo, but you’ll at least get their physical features down and learn a little more about them.

Catenarian Chronicles is a dark paranormal series full of Easter Eggs

Cursed Mage by TC MartiThere are Easter Eggs galore in this series. And what you see above are the only ones I can remember off the top of my head as I write this piece. Chances are, I missed others and readers will surely point them out, so there could easily be a Part II here.

And who knows? Maybe you’ll find some in Cursed Mage before you even pick up and read Astray Mage. So check it out if you’ve read the other series in the Renegades Epic and let me know if you find anything.

Or, if Cursed Mage is your first rodeo, chances are, it’ll interest you enough to check out other books on the backlist that, when read, you’ll make more connections between each series than you can count. Check out Cursed Mage and see how deep the rabbit hole goes.
