Dear Kindle Unlimited Readers: Brace Yourself for the Elementals Universe

Dear Kindle Unlimited Readers: Brace Yourself for the Elementals Universe

If you’re one of the millions of Kindle Unlimited readers out there, then you’re in luck. I’m in that group, and I’ve found myself much more willing to continue reading a book series if I’m in Kindle Unlimited. In fact, I’m about five times more likely to immediately download the next book in a series (or universe) if it’s in Kindle Unlimited.

If you’re not one of the millions of Kindle Unlimited readers out there, you may be asking yourself what it is.

Kindle Unlimited is basically a subscription package. For a small monthly payment, you have access to millions of books. That said, every book in the Elementals Universe will be on Kindle Unlimited. Which of course means it’s going to be exclusive to Amazon, at least as far as ebooks go.

But hey, it’s worth the opportunity cost, given my own experience reading works in KU and that of other readers. Some authors may disagree, and that’s okay. Especially if they’ve had success publishing wide. But, we’re all different.

So the following is my reasoning behind enrolling in KU.

My Genre-Does Well With Kindle Unlimited Readers

Liza Fury
Epic/urban fantasy, such as Liza Fury, pertains well to Kindle Unlimited readers.

Kindle Unlimited readers do well with my chosen genre, which is deeply entrenched in science fiction and fantasy. Literally both, with epic fantasy character concepts and tropes bent into a technologically advanced world.

I previously wrote a post about Kindle Vella and touched on genres that do well there. Unfortunately, sci-fi/fantasy is not one of those genres. However, Reedsy’s Ricardo Fayet did list it as one of the more successful genres among Kindle Unlimited readers in his popular¬†How to Market a Book: Overperform in a Crowded Market.¬†

That said, it was a no-brainer for me to decide on placing every book written in the Elementals Universe into Kindle Unlimited. Obviously, the reader magnets will not reach Amazon. And if you’re interested in reading them, you can download the first book, Chronicles of the Elementals, at the following link.

However, if you do not have Kindle Unlimited, you can still purchase each work in the Elementals Universe at a cheap price – 99 cents for Book I in EACH series, $1.99 for Book II, $2.99 for Book III, $3.99 for Book IV, and a flat rate of $4.99 for Books V and beyond. Yes, I do plan on selling each book in paperback and hardback formats, along with audio versions. So you got many options here if you are not one of the millions of Kindle Unlimited readers out there.

Would I Ever Leave Kindle Unlimited?

Braden Hawk Prequel
If books like Braden Hawk generate enough interest, I will branch out.

Okay, confession time!

I have a love/hate relationship with Amazon. On one end, they’re a great way to grant yourself exposure. And on the other hand, they can change their algorithms at will and even blacklist you for reasons known but to them. Worse yet, it’s rarely a human pulling these strings, as they opt for bots.

I’m not the biggest fan of Amazon and I know many of us aren’t as well.

So would I leave Kindle Unlimited in the future?

It really depends on my reader base. If it’s large enough, then yes, I would do the following:

  1. Leave Kindle Unlimited but keep each work on Amazon.
  2. Publish wide to iBooks, Kobo, and other competing outlets.
  3. Directly sell each work through my own (this) website.

Ultimately, there is a time and place for leaving Kindle Unlimited. Also, if the demand from those who choose to read from other outlets is high enough, I’d be more than happy to nix the agreements with Amazon since again, they’re not my favorite outlet in the world, but Amazon has its uses.

Some authors call Amazon a best friend, others, the worst enemy. For me, Amazon is more of a frenemy. I like them, but I don’t like them. Amazon has its uses, but it definitely has its vices. And at the end of the day, Amazon will look out for Amazon, and I will in turn lookout for both me and my readers. Even if it means ultimately selling through my website and other platforms.

But to start things off, I will appeal exclusively to Kindle Unlimited readers, then branch off from there.

How Many Books are Planned for the Elementals Universe?

Wind Wielder
Say hello to Wind Wielder, Book I in the Elementals Universe.

Thus far, I have at least eight books planned, at least five of which reside in Elementals of Nordica. But these are the books currently in production. Overall, you can expect at least three-dozen works encompassing several main characters, ensemble casts, crossovers, and series in the Elementals Universe.
