Enough Already by Scott Horton ends the war lies
If there’s one book that should be mandatory reading for anyone who still thinks America fights wars for freedom, it’s Enough Already by Scott Horton.
This book is an absolute demolition job—chapter by chapter, exposing lie by lie—on the last 40-plus years of U.S. foreign policy. Horton’s message is simple: The War on Terror and those that came before it was a fraud from day one. And every justification for it has fallen apart.
What the book does (and why it matters)
Horton doesn’t waste time with patriotic fluff. No honest libertarian does, and that’s a good thing. He opens the hood and shows you the machinery: CIA coups, Saudi alliances, drone strikes, blown peace deals, civilian deaths, and one failed intervention after another.
Here’s just a fraction of what Enough Already covers:
-
How the U.S. goaded Iraq into war in the ’90s and then lied about WMDs in 2003.
-
How backing jihadists in Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria created the very terrorist groups we later claimed to fight.
-
How the U.S. alliance with Israel and Saudi Arabia fueled endless regional instability, not peace.
-
How every “success” story (Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Yemen) ends in blown-up hospitals, torture sites, and failed states.
Who should read this
If you still think U.S. military force spreads democracy, or if you’re done pretending that’s true, this book is for you. Apologies for the cliche!
Horton isn’t some leftist pacifist or a nationalist isolationist. He’s a libertarian realist who believes in nonintervention, not because war is never justified, but because it’s almost never honest when “defense” means invading foreign soil.
And it’s never the Pentagon contractors who pay the price. It’s American taxpayers, civilians abroad, and veterans coming home in pieces. And if their bodies aren’t in pieces, their minds are.
Most devastating takeaways
-
“They hate us for our freedom” was a marketing slogan. Horton reminds readers that 9/11 was blowback, not the result of freedom envy, but decades of U.S. bombs, bases, and political manipulation in the Middle East.
-
Obama expanded the War on Terror. Horton documents how the Obama administration took George W. Bush’s war machine and put it on steroids: mass surveillance, drone warfare, regime change in Libya, and attempted regime change in Syria.
-
ISIS was not a surprise. It was also blowback. The U.S. created the conditions for ISIS by arming and empowering jihadists in the vacuum of Iraq and Syria. Then they used ISIS as a new excuse for further war.
-
The military-industrial complex needs permanent war. Horton makes clear: these wars weren’t mistakes. They were profitable. Perpetual. By design. Further reading: War is a Racket by Smedley Butler.
Connection to Civil War and real-world tyranny
In my recent article Why the West ignores North Korea’s abuses and backs Israel, I called out the Western double standard: How the U.S. ignores actual authoritarian horrors like North Korea’s death camps or Israel’s apartheid policies while condemning Iran or Russia for geopolitical convenience.
Scott Horton goes deeper. He shows how:
-
U.S. leaders knowingly support regimes that commit atrocities, including Israel and Saudi Arabia.
-
They lie to justify war, using fear and nationalism as weapons.
-
They abandon diplomacy in favor of violence. Even when peaceful options exist.
That’s the same mindset I explore in Civil War—except in that world, it’s called Bastille (wonder where that name came from?). In this one, it’s called Washington, D.C.
Enough Already by Scott Horton aces the litmus test
Rating: 5 Runes. That’s right, we don’t use stars here; we use f*cking runes. Required reading for anyone who still believes in truth, peace, and accountability.
Enough Already isn’t just a book for libertarians, so if you ain’t one, it’s cool. It’s for anyone who wants to stop being lied to. For anyone who’s sick of watching entire countries turned to rubble in the name of “freedom.”
