Hogwarts Castle, the Golden Trio's main setting

Golden Trio casting restores my faith in Harry Potter reboot

HBO’s Golden Trio casting stayed true to the books, restoring my hope that the Harry Potter reboot might actually respect the original story.

Let’s be honest: most of us expected HBO’s Harry Potter reboot to crash and burn before it even aired. Between the identity politics, the predictable race-swaps, and the obsession with rewriting classic characters for the sake of “representation,” faith in this project was hanging by a thread. But then something happened that no one saw coming:

They cast the Golden Trio right. That’s correct—Harry, Ron, and Hermione actually look and feel like the characters J.K. Rowling wrote. And that one decision has managed, however slightly, to restore a shred of faith in this upcoming series for me.

A glance at new faces of the Wizarding World

  • Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter
He might not be a household name (yet), but he looks and carries himself like the Harry we read about—messy black hair, quiet intensity, and just enough of that outsider energy. He’s not flashy. He’s not preachy. He’s Harry, and he looks a hell of a lot like Daniel Radcliffe.

  • Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger
With a strong background in theater (Matilda the Musical, Starlight Express), Stanton looks the part and brings proven talent to a role that deserves it. She’s a know-it-all with a backbone, not a box-checking exercise. And her features resemble Hermione from the books – something Emma Watson never really conveyed.

  • Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley
Red-haired, freckled, and down-to-earth, it’s clear they didn’t try to reimagine Ron into some snarky modern stereotype. Stout nails the humble charm and loyal heart that made Ron so relatable. Now, the burning question is, Can they make him act like Ron from the books?

Finally—someone read the damn books

This casting is the first real sign that HBO might actually respect the source material instead of trying to “fix” it, which was the vibe I got when they cast Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. For too long, we’ve watched studios rewrite characters and distort canon just to appease activist critics who are only good at getting angry and shouting until they get their way. This time, they stuck to the script—and quite a few of us noticed.

There’s no shame in staying true to the original story. In fact, it’s what most fans want. People didn’t fall in love with Harry Potter because it was “diverse” or “modern.” They loved it because it was powerful, honest, and contained a setting that will never die. If this series can hold that line, it has a fighting chance.

It’s a start—but I ain’t letting my guard down

This casting gives me a reason to hope—but let’s not get soft. Snape’s race-swapping is still a major red flag. The producers clearly aren’t above pushing modern narratives, and they’ll face constant pressure to do just that. One right move (or three) doesn’t cancel out the Essiedu casting.

But when they get something right—like this—I’m giving them credit, because I want more of it.

The stakes are high

The Harry Potter legacy doesn’t need to be rewritten. It needs to be respected. And the new Golden Trio casting is a rare moment of clarity in an industry that’s forgotten why stories matter in the first place.

If HBO continues to honor the world Rowling built—warts and all—it might just pull off the impossible: winning back the fans who were ready to walk away for good.

And if it doesn’t? You’ll hear about it from me. Oh, but if they can righten another wrong, I have a request: Can you please get my Hogwarts House’s colors and logo right? That would be greatly appreciated.

Why does this even matter?

For me, no other book series inspired my own works than Harry Potter. From Tarja Titan to Wind Wielder, and definitely Arcane Elemental Academy, the Harry Potter inspiration is all over my own works. Hell, you could even call Tarja, Kira Myoi, and Floor Jetta a golden trio, or Yote Diamondback and her two cronies in Arcane.

Add in fictional sports and madmen looking to off or at least do considerable harm to my main characters, and you got Potter written all over it. Want an introduction that will ease you into one of my twisted worlds?
