New Harry Potter trailer was absolutely badass

We finally got our first look at the Harry Potter trailer, and wow, what an awesome way to kick off a series that resembles the books.

A lot of Harry Potter fans had their reservations about what this TV series would look like. And I was no exception. The minute they cast Paapa Essiedu for Severus Snape, I was definitely in the “oh God, this is gonna be a wokefest” crowd.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m still not a fan of the casting and it’s one I’ll never grow used to. But one hiccup (that we know about) shouldn’t dismantle an entire TV series. I’ve done my due diligence on Essiedu and I’ll even concede that he’s a damn good actor who could probably convey any role handed to him.

But the trailer has righted a few wrongs, like setting the series in the 1990s as opposed to the 2000s. Many of the characters cast into their roles look like their book counterparts to a T, and wow, the trailer hinting at showing a lot of what Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone told us is a bonus.

Did the Harry Potter trailer sway me?

I’ve been getting swayed since I saw the Golden Trio casting last year, and it hasn’t stopped. Seeing some of the earlier screenshots that hinted at some of that showing: like Dumbledore on a beach, presumably to meet with Nicholas Flamel, and the trailer showing us Dudley bullying Harry at school were major pluses. Ditto for the haircut scene, which is also shown in the trailer.

The Gryffindor vs. Hufflepuff scene sparked the “sports uniform monitor” in me to be like “Yes, they kept the name and number on the uniforms” — something introduced in the films.

And Hogwarts itself looks incredible: literally as I first pictured it in the books when I first “took a stab” at the series in 1999. I was falling for Hogwarts fast—around the same time Song Yuqi was being born. Yeah… that’s a strange overlap.

While I’ll lay my cards on the line and never get used to the Snape casting — even in the trailer it didn’t look right — 95 percent of it was just magical, pun intended. Literally to the point that I can say that, this Christmas, “I’ll be in my room, making no noise, pretending” that I’m somewhere in the Scottish Highlands.

If that trailer pulled you back into that academy-style magic, I’ve got something for you.
