Satu Viiminen and Yours Truly are one and the same
Satu Viiminen is your resident silent badass of Cursed Mage, and any time she makes an appearance in the Catenarian Chronicles.
Satu translates into ‘fairy tale,’ which is why she snagged the memorable name. While I once said Kaarina Taivalkoski would be the female character I’d date, she only edged out Satu, or Sats as many call her, because she’s got Mage ability.
Still, I’d fall head over skates for a girl like Satu, Kaija Jokiharju’s roommate in Cursed Mage and arguably the book’s top supporting character. Here’s a quick rundown of Sats, and you’ll know in two seconds why she’d charm me:
- She’s a gym rat
- Is lean as f*ck
- Loves protein shakes
- Is an unapologetic libertarian
- Spits on hawkish foreign policy
- Would be a Ravenclaw at Hogwarts
- Can sometimes be insecure
Yeah, that’s a carbon copy of me and power couple material. Satu’s also the kind of girl you take home to Mom and Dad after the first date because she’s that damn sweet.
I wasn’t the only inspiration for Satu Viiminen
E.E. Holmes’ Spirit Legacy was a massive inspiration for Cursed Mage, and if it wasn’t for Jess Ballard’s roommate, Tia Vezga. Satu never would’ve existed. Even if she’s not much different from me, Tia’s the first reason I even thought of creating a character like Satu.
While I have no clue what Tia’s political views are, she’s still a voice of reason, logical, and open-minded girl. Satu carries those same traits.
The only real difference is that, while Tia’s a compulsive worrier who gets relegated into a background role as Spirit Legacy progresses, Satu’s front and center. She even insists on getting more active when Kaija sees and interacts with spirits and the spirit element.
Satu’s the yin to my yang
If there’s one major difference between me and Satu, it’s that she’s outgoing. While I’m the reclusive homebody, Satu loves going to sporting events, starting conversations, and exploring new things.
She can be shy and backward, and only approaches and speaks to people she feels secure around. In Cursed Mage, she hesitates to confront a guy whose bag’s taking up space in a lecture hall, leading for Kaija to take charge.
She also cowered down from Edvin Korhonen when he cornered her in a dormitory hallway. Kaija came to her rescue there, too.
Still, Satu greeted Kaija and her Uncle Vaino with open arms when they first met. She always talked with the R.A., Niko, and I implied she had little problem making friends in many of her classes.
While Satu’s not your stereotypical extrovert who’d talk anyone’s head off, she always likes stepping outta her comfort zone in social spheres.
Meet Satu in Cursed Mage
Satu’s the best supporting character in the book. The sweetest? I wouldn’t go that far, since girl I’ll keep under the wraps might one-up her.
Still, Sats is everything a guy like me would want a girl, and what a college freshman would want in a roommate. A nice girl, but a silent rebel. Someone who lifts weights and boasts a toned, yet feminine physique.
She’ll avoid walking into aisles at grocery stores with few exceptions, would talk about Mises, Rothbard, and Austrian economics all day with you if she lived in our world, and would help expose American foreign policy for what it is.
That’s the girl you’ll meet in Cursed Mage. Check it out now.
