A secluded off-grid settlement hidden in the wooded hills of southeastern Ohio, featuring a U-shaped cluster of multi-story wooden cabins with warm lights glowing from large windows, surrounded by dense forest and misty Appalachian hills at dusk.

Setting for Beyond the Lost Assault: The Colony

The Colony was the brainchild of a man named Martin Richards. And Beyond the Lost Assault reveals its true purpose. That said, it makes a cameo in Horizon.

In Beyond the Lost Horizon, you’ll get a rundown of the Colony. It’s in a secluded area in southeastern Ohio, outside McConnelsville, and as far off the grid as you can go.

The Colony was built sometime before the attack that ended America and the developed world in Horizon, and Martin Richards started moving people into the place a good year and a half before the world went to hell.

Our fearless protagonist, Quinn Cozens, had known about the Colony’s existence for years. Before the events of Horizon, Martin offered Quinn a spot. Quinn, the ambitious firebrand he was at the time, wanted to get his sportswriting career to the next level.

Ironically, it wasn’t long until the craft disillusioned Quinn. Still, he stuck with it, and the idea of living in the Colony after Martin “disappeared” faded into the back of his mind.

How did I come up with the Colony?

Beyond the Lost Horizon by TC MartiIronically, an acquaintance of mine who helped inspire Martin’s character cooked up the idea. This individual, who is every bit the reactionary Martin is, fantasized about an off-the-grid place. As opposed to Ohio, they were thinking more along the lines of the Pennsylvania wilderness.

Through them, I got the Colony’s layout: a U-shaped village with multiple-story cabins and floor-to-ceiling windows. One complete with a school, a sanctuary, a mess hall, an infirmary, and other places of necessity.

While that might be better than the surveillance state that’s coming, taking a plunge into such a place would be frightening. It’s the kind of crossing of the first threshold moment in which you know your life will change forever. To the point the State might just call you an outlier and perhaps more.

In Beyond the Lost Assault, there’s a brewing surveillance state rising from America’s ashes. But what caused Quinn to try and book it for the Colony after America’s collapse? Horizon shows the moment Quinn chooses whether survival is worth surrender. Get it now.
