The Finnish months echo nature’s rhythm through the year
Forget the Indo-European grid. The Finnish months pulse with meaning, with each one tied to nature, magic, and the rhythm your soul was meant to follow.
Most people look at a calendar and see deadlines, appointments, and maybe a birthday or two. But in Aurora, and across the world of Xadis, time is more than a box to tick. It’s a cycle of meaning, magic, and elements.
That’s why the typical Indo-European grid didn’t survive in this world’s lore. Instead, it uses the Finnish months, with each one pulsing with nature’s rhythm and symbolic weight.
The language may be foreign, but the meaning behind it is instinctual. It’s the rhythm your soul was always meant to follow. Here’s how we mark the passage of time in the libertarian young adult academy fantasy, The Arcane Prophecy.
Tammikuu – January
Oak Month: The oak doesn’t bloom in winter, but it endures. This is a month of stillness, discipline, and deep-rooted strength. Element: Earth
In The Arcane Prophecy, one of the book’s most important plot points advances in Tammikuu.
Helmikuu – February
Month of Pearls: Frosted branches wear beads of light like armor. Everything looks dead, but inside? Magic stirs. Man, that one just sent shivers down my spine. Element: Water
Maaliskuu – March
Earth Month: The thaw begins, roots tremble, and the soil loosens its grip on winter. New potential surges underground. No wonder the month brings us a sense of optimism. Element: Earth
Huhtikuu – April
Slash-and-Burn Month: Old growth must fall for new life to rise. Fire clears the way, and rebirth doesn’t ask for permission. Element: Fire
In The Arcane Prophecy, things start to get real in Huhtikuu for Yote Diamondback and Co. But that’s nothing compared to the following month.
Toukokuu – May
Sowing Month: Plant your spells, intentions, and future. What you nurture now will shape your standing later. Element: Water
In Toukokuu, we’re getting close to The Arcane Prophecy’s climax, which introduces us to the first of several gargantuan plot twists.
Kesäkuu – June
Summer Month: The world pulses with light. Magic is loud, unruly, and beautiful. Joy and heat blend in full bloom. Element: Fire
This was supposed to be a quiet month in the Arcane Elemental Academy series. But something tells me it won’t be.
Heinäkuu – July
Hay Month: The grind is real. This is the month of sweat, effort, and invisible progress. Cut now, or starve later. Element: Air
Elokuu – August
Harvest Month: You reap what you’ve conjured. Success is public now, and so is failure. Elemental rites intensify. Element: Fire
Elokuu is when Yote starts calling Aurora Village home. And while her separation anxiety’s real, her love for this village, which is a character in and of itself, goes far beyond its charm. The place feels oddly familiar.
Syyskuu – September
Autumn Month: Leaves don’t fall—they release. Time to reflect, release, and refocus. Balance is everything. Element: Earth
Ah yes, Syyskuu brings us the beginnings of the autumn wind. And with it comes the beginning of thrashball season. Just as in our own world, NHL training camps and the preseason kick off during this month.
What’d you think I was gonna say? The NFL?
Lokakuu – October
Mud Month: Rain soaks the truth from the ground. Expect secrets to surface, and illusions to decay. Element: Water
Oh yes, some big secrets emerge at Samhain. And it’s when Yote’s got a choice to make in The Arcane Prophecy.
Marraskuu – November
Death Month: Life contracts, the veil thins, and ancestors whisper. This is when Spirit walks freely. Element: Spirit
Yote’s about to get a big surprise come Marraskuu. But that surprise won’t come into its own until the following month.
Joulukuu – December
Yule Month: Darkness wins—for a moment. But light never dies. Yule is the turning point, the spark of return. Element: Water
And for Yote, it’s the first clue that she’s returning to something. Oh, and her birthday also happens to occur on the 31st of that month. And no, it’s not a coincidence that our girl, a Slytherin if she attended Hogwarts, shares a birthday with Tom Riddle.
In The Arcane Prophecy, months aren’t markers. Instead, they’re warnings, invitations, commands, or a combo. And the same holds true in The Arcane Prophecy’s prequel novella, Arcane Awakenings. If you want a backdrop on the series, be sure to check out this free story.
