The most heart-wrenching character who lost everything but her purpose

Sabre Kjaergaard is by far the most heart-wrenching character in the Renegades Epic, and it’s not even close when you take a deep dive.

Sabre’s tale begins as a curious rebel. Someone who asks, “What would happen if I stepped out of line?”

Unfortunately for Sabre, her Sentry heritage already chose her fate. If she didn’t step out of line when she did, she’d have a hundred swords capable of conjuring fire, summoning water and earth, and unleashing damaging winds pointed at her.

Her crime? Possessing the Sentry gene, which gives her the ability to control an element. In the tightly-controlled society she lives in, if she runs, it means the death of an immediate family member.

Or, someone she thought was her immediate family. Throughout the Sentrys of Terrene trilogy — with Sentrys spelled in a unique way thanks to the work’s lore — Sabre realizes she’s been lied to for eighteen years. And nearly everyone she grows close to will suffer some of the most gruesome, painful deaths.

The most tragic part?

It didn’t need to be that way.

Sabre’s biological father made a fatal error

Remember when Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader? Sabre’s dad, Lars, did something similar. He succumbed to the notorious Venn Order, overthrew and massacred the Sentrys, and ultimately became the second-in-command next to his boss, Venn Hagg.

War engulfed the world. Civilians caught in the crossfire were slaughtered. And Lars’ biggest fear was that he’d come home from a mission and find his family dead. He grew so worked up over the prospect — especially with what he saw and experienced during the war — he made an unbreakable vow. A deal with the devil.

But the devil was going to collect. He—or she—wasn’t about to let Lars gain the upper hand. She wanted Lars at her side, but in a helpless state. But only after he did her bidding, destroyed the Sentrys, and any civilian gutsy enough to resist them.

It didn’t need to be this way. Lars was a war hero, arguably the most powerful Sentry Master in existence. What he did tore apart a family that Sabre never knew. She grew up thinking her mom disappeared before the war ended, when the truth was much more sinister and disturbing.

Sabre also didn’t know she got separated from an older brother right before that same war ended. Or that the woman who lured her father away was once her mother’s best friend.

Sabre becomes much more of a heart-wrenching character

Throughout Books I, II, and III, Sabre meets a lot of people. She grows close to them, and unfortunately, they don’t live long enough to see the end of the trilogy.

Just when she starts getting to know one person, they’re either killed, they die voluntarily, or they’re tortured to death. Worse yet, Sabre discovers she has a psychic connection with her corrupt father—one he uses to exploit her weaknesses and send false signals that her friends are in danger.

They’re not—but those signals entice Sabre to act recklessly before she inadvertently puts her and those around her lives at stake. At the end of the day, Sabre blames nobody but herself for losing friends she’s grown close to. All while understanding the truth behind her father’s downfall.

For a moment, she held out hope she’d redeem her dad, that she’d find her mother, and they’d be a close, tight-knit family when this conflict ended. And as with any tortured character, glimmers of hope flashed—until they died.

That’s what hits Sabre at every single turn until she reaches a breaking point. Yet, unfortunately for Sabre, if she’s going to vanquish any threat, she has no choice but to fulfill a higher calling that fate laid out for her.

Because if she refuses, then not only her world, but the Five Worlds, will be in so much mortal danger that there’d be no turning back.
