True events inspired Cursed Mage and the Renegades Epic
Cursed Mage and the Renegades Epic wouldn’t exist without diabolical true events that plagued our world since the 20th century.
It sucks to say this, but if the 20th and 21st centuries weren’t so violent, neither Cursed Mage nor the Renegades Epic would exist. Or, maybe they would, but they’d be warnings of a bloody future, not what happens when you set the stage for a war-ravaged present.
Scholars estimate war killed between 157 and 210 million people from 1900 to 2025, and if you add in a couple of pandemics, and that number threatens 300 million.
But since I wouldn’t count pandemics as “bloody” unless we’re talking about surefire biological warfare, I’ll leave them out.
Born from mass violence
Even if Cursed Mage goes light on the entire war and military fantasy tilt, you still know it’s going on off-screen. Early in the book, our (mostly) fearless protagonist, Kaija Jokiharju, overhears a broadcast of what’s going on with her home nation’s intervention in another nation overseas.
She’s just not part of the action, unlike the protagonists in my other works:
- Sion Zona in Elementals of Nordica
- Mina Hirai in Chronicles of Rondure
- Sabre Kjaergaard in Sentrys of Terrene
- Mali LaSalle in Cymraeg Tales
- Liza Fury in Terrian Chronicles
All of the above series put you in the middle of relentless fighting, and yes, blood, gore, and intense violence are all over the damn place.
-
Sion Zona fights every global power in sight.
-
Mina Hirai topples enemies at home before invading abroad.
-
Sabre Kjaergaard uncovers a false peace before a nuclear strike.
-
Mali LaSalle clashes with supersoldiers from another world.
-
Liza Fury faces enemies foreign and familiar in a war without borders.

Past, present, and future wars
A lot of people talk about “fifth-generation warfare”—war fought with propaganda, psyops, and information instead of bullets.
Problem is, those who don’t succumb to “fifth-generation warfare” will be the boots on the ground. And what you see in five of those six series is a result of those that “fifth-generation warfare” didn’t break.
Every superpower society and their allies in those series, from Elementals of Nordica to Catenarian Chronicles, has bowed down to their psywar overlords at different stages.
Regardless of what kind of war they’ve declared on the mind, it’ll still end in blood and a lot of it. That’s why my Renegades Epic takes lessons learned from the blood spilled in the 20th and 21st centuries and fuses it with “fifth-generation warfare.”
Start reading any series you’d like, because if you want military fantasy infused with tech-advanced and magical systems, plus ultra-complex plots that’ll make you pick up a scorecard, you’ve found the right author.
