An author writing politically dissident fiction stands before a propaganda billboard in a dystopian setting

Why politically dissident fiction struggles to surface

They bury politically dissident fiction with algorithms. I write it anyway for readers smart enough to think and bold enough to feel it.

So, you wrote a novel that dares to challenge state power. Maybe your protagonist refuses to comply, or maybe your worldbuilding exposes the consequences of collectivism, surveillance, or forced equality. Or, best yet, maybe your story actually means something.

Now try getting it seen.

Welcome to the digital colosseum, where platforms pretend to “empower” creators while quietly suppressing anything that questions the prevailing order. This isn’t just happening to political pundits and hotheaded YouTubers. It’s happening to novelists, worldbuilders, and fiction writers with ideas that don’t fit the script.

Here’s how the algorithm buries liberty and why going direct might be your only best shot.

Conformity ranks higher than courage

Algorithms don’t “read” nuance. They reward patterns, and the clearest pattern involves books that echo what’s already selling will be seen. Books that challenge it won’t.

So, if you’re not writing cozy fantasy, spicy rom-coms, or socially approved dystopia-lite, you’re outside the algorithm’s comfort zone.

Platforms like Amazon, Apple Books, and other major outlets promote:

  • Genre over guts

  • Keywords over originality

  • Trend alignment over-thematic weight

Your book might be better and truer. But if it isn’t predictable, nobody’s showing it unless you have a massive-ass following that’ll make the ‘Zon and Apple money.

Censorship without the C-word (god, that sounded so wrong)

You won’t get a takedown notice unless you really ‘f*ck up.’ You’ll just… disappear. Shadow-banned, in other words.

Fiction that even lightly critiques centralized power, DEI mandates, and surveillance or “benevolent” collectivism is quietly filtered. You won’t know why your ads aren’t approved, why your Also Boughts vanish, or why your visibility drops just after publishing.

In many cases, this is automated ideological gatekeeping. In others, it’s the result of vague “sensitive content” policies enforced unevenly.

And while classics like 1984 or Brave New World get a free pass (because they bring in money), new works with similar themes are often penalized, especially if they’re indie, small-press, or unapologetically conservative or libertarian.

Politically dissident fiction is ghettoized or ghosted

Try listing your book in the “Political Fiction” category on Amazon. You’ll be buried by:

  • Traditional literary fiction with political backdrops

  • Socialist utopias with mainstream praise

  • Legacy novels from authors who haven’t written since the Cold War, and my femme K-pop crushes’ ancestors could still walk around what is today North Korea

And if your book leans libertarian, anti-authoritarian, or even questions the dominant cultural narrative, it gets lost even faster.

Many authors report:

  • Unapproved Amazon ads when using keywords like “liberty,” “freedom,” or “anti-government”

  • Facebook ad blocks for fantasy novels with political themes

This isn’t random or neutral. It’s the system favoring safety over sovereignty, even in the stories we tell.

The Solution: Go direct and build deep

If you write liberty-minded fiction, you need to stop depending on systems built to erase you. So…

  • Sell direct. Build your own site, and use platforms like Substack, Ghost, or MailerLite that give you your own list and layout.

  • Talk about ideas. Don’t just market your books. Write about what they mean, use essays, lore drops, and theme breakdowns to hook your ideal reader.

  • Find your people. Forget trends, and connect with readers who value individualism, rebellion, and truth.

The algorithm may reward conformity, but there’s a growing class of readers who want something dangerous—something real.
