You’ll never see me trying to court BookTok or KU tourists
I steer clear of BookTok or KU tourists on purpose. They’re mainly casual readers looking for a dopamine rush and an escape.
I pride myself on authentic storytelling. That means I couldn’t care less about fitting my work neatly into genre boxes or even relegating anything I write to a single genre.
I’ll never claim to be the most authentic author you’ll ever meet. And if I claimed it before, I don’t remember. But I’m pretty freaking authentic.
Either way, I’ll never court algo-friendly readers who scour BookTok, Bookstagram, or Kindle Unlimited tourists. Ever.
They’re casual readers, and my readers demand fiction that bites and doesn’t know when to stop biting. That means you’re getting genre-fusion work even if it comes across initially as genre fiction.
Let’s take a deep dive into exactly what I’m talking about.
Some of my fiction is homeless and that’s a testament
Think old-world fantasy tropes with swords that channel elemental magic. Now, fuse it with small-town fantasy, sci-fi, dystopian, and military concepts. Throw in the sporty subplot and you have a work for readers who crave something different.
I was just getting freaking started
Tarja Titan drew Harry Potter vibes from readers. Okay, I get it: Orphaned girl who doesn’t know what she is gets a letter to attend a magic school. Great. Fantastic. It’s familiar before I deke the puck and backhand it “top shelf where Mama hides the cookies.”
There’s 22nd-century tech involved, alternate history involving a global conspiracy dating back to the Middle Ages, metaphysical fantasy elements, and no clear-cut antagonist after Book I.
