Yote and Jett Diamondback of the young adult fantasy Arcane Elemental Academy

Young adult fantasy hands teens power and dares them to use it

Young adult fantasy is about characters standing at the edge of everything, like identity, power, and responsibility, and deciding if they’ll sink or swim.

This subgenre lives in chaos between childhood and adulthood, where stakes feel personal and world-ending. There’s still magic, monsters, and mayhem, but the real fire comes from within. Fear, rebellion, grief, hope, first love, first betrayal, the first everything, really, it all hits harder when you’re still figuring out who you are.

That’s the burning core of young adult fantasy. It dares teens to survive high-stakes situations laden with complex magical systems, break them, fix them, or burn them all down.

You’ll find royal heirs who never wanted the crown, which is what you’ll read in the Cymraeg Tales. Outcasts who learn they’re walking weapons. Hmm, that’s also present in the Cymraeg Tales.

Quiet kids with dark pasts. Angry ones with bright futures, even if they don’t know it, and just about every other troublesome situation you can think of. They might start off unsure, even powerless. But by the end? They’ve either changed their world, or it changed them.

Some stories feel like fast-paced thrill rides with spells and swords

Others go darker, pulling characters through trauma, heartbreak, and choices that leave scars, which is the case in Terrian Chronicles. Either way, the genre doesn’t hold hands. Instead, it gives young characters impossible weight to carry, and watches to see if they break.

If you’ve read Throne of Glass, Shadow and Bone, or An Ember in the Ashes, you’ve seen how YA fantasy pulls readers into raw, emotional wars, both internal and external. These stories let young characters screw up, fall in love, lose people, and still get back up swinging.

The Renegades Epic and Elementals Universe defines young adult fantasy

Let’s venture outside the “Original Six” series (also known as the Renegades Epic) and talk about Arcane Elemental Academy, which fits young adult fantasy perfectly. Yote Diamondback is a nervous, fourteen-year-old girl who’d always lived in her sister’s shadow. While Jett gets all the attention, popularity, and accolades from her peers, Yote’s often shunted to one side.

Well, at least that’s the case in my prequel novella, Arcane Awakenings. Even in that small novelette of a story, Yote’s about to face some death-defying situations, and they go far beyond just standing up to her middle school’s “mean girls.”

So remember, young adult fantasy doesn’t, and thank goodness it doesn’t, treat its characters like kids. It hands them the fire and dares them not to burn themselves. Or, it just throws them into the deep end of a lake without a life jacket and dares them to swim against the current.
