How dangerous are go-with-the-flow conformists?
Normies come in different flavors, but nobody’s more bitter than go-with-the-flow conformists. They’re the ultimate enablers.
The firebrand is easy to spot. He’s loud, obnoxious, and impossible to ignore. He waves his ideological flag and dares you to challenge him. The guy’s a billboard for his cause, and even if you hate his message, you know where he stands.
The ideological conformist is equally predictable. He parrots the talking points of his tribe and never thinks for himself. He’s a mouthpiece for CNN or Fox News, a carbon copy of the last opinion he heard.
But at least he’s anchored to something, however false it may be. You can counter him with facts, history, or logic, because he has an actual framework, flawed as it is.
But the “go with the flow” conformist? He’s worse.
The ultimate enabler
The firebrand shouts and the ideologue chants. But nothing sticks without the masses’ silent approval.
The “go with the flow” conformist is the man nodding along, filling out the form, wearing the mask, and scanning the QR code. He makes tyranny scalable, even if he don’t fight for it. Without him, unjust laws and oppressive systems grind to a halt. With him, they run smoothly.
He’s the citizen who shrugs as freedoms vanish, the worker who complies so others feel pressured to comply, and the consumer who normalizes restrictions because “it’s just the way things are.” He’s the oxygen that ignites authoritarianism’s spark.
He has no principles
The firebrand has misguided principles and the ideological conformist has borrowed ones. But the “go with the flow” type? He’s got none.
His morality’s whatever the mob says it is this week. If the crowd wears masks, he wears masks, his employer exchanges jabs for a gift card, he rolls up his sleeve, and when the crowd insists that freedom is “selfish,” he’ll gladly echo the line.
That lack of principle makes him dangerous, because you can’t argue him out of a position he never thought through in the first place. He doesn’t stand for anything, and therefore, he’ll fall for everything.
He’s invisible
You can see the firebrand coming and argue with the ideologue. But you don’t notice the “go with the flow” guy until it’s too late.
- He’s the neighbor who shrugs as rights vanish.
- The co-worker who silently accepts company mandates.
- And the friend who normalizes every new level of control by saying, “That’s just the way it is.”
He doesn’t raise his voice, but his quiet compliance is louder than any protest. By the time you realize he’s gone along with everything, the damage is already done.
The real enemy of liberty
The “go with the flow” conformist is the real enemy of liberty.
Why? Because authoritarianism succeeds when millions of ordinary people shrug their shoulders, obey the rules, and tell themselves they’re just “going along to get along.”
He’s the grease in the gears of tyranny, the silent enabler, and the one who makes injustice look normal.
That’s why he’s worse than both the firebrand and the ideologue combined.
Unapologetic takeaway
Liberty collapses because friends like him stay silent and go with the flow. But you know who refuses to stay silent?
Quinn Cozens, the protagonist in my dystopian/survival Beyond the Lost trilogy. He may be a sportswriter, someone who sees the status quo of DEI, CRT, and ESG every day. Hell, Quinn’s got conformists in his crosshairs no matter where he looks. But he’s never once buckled. In fact, Quinn’s unapologetic libertarian views grew stronger.
How strong?
Let’s say he’s a firebrand in his own right. A firebrand for civil liberties. Find out how passionate he is in Book I of the trilogy, Beyond the Lost Horizon.
