Paranormal fantasy blurs the line between life and death

Paranormal fantasy pulls the supernatural into a world we already know. Ghosts, vampires, witches, and shapeshifters all exist just a step beyond everyday life.

These entities hide in plain sight or lurk under the surface. And sometimes, they have a story to tell. Some are tragic, yet others are far, far more sinister.

Unlike high fantasy’s far-off kingdoms or epic fantasy’s sprawling wars, paranormal fantasy often takes place in towns, cities, or tucked-away communities. Haunted houses stand next to coffee shops. Secret magical societies hold meetings in abandoned subway tunnels. Humans and supernatural beings mix, clash, and sometimes fall in love in ways that feel dangerously real.

The magic in paranormal fantasy feels emotional. It’s tied to personal struggles—lost loves, buried secrets, promises made and broken. Stories often carry a strong romantic or tragic edge, blending the thrilling and the heart-wrenching in the same breath.

Characters might be ordinary people dragged into supernatural chaos, or they might be born into the shadows—witches who keep their powers secret, vampires who walk among humans, or mediums who talk to the dead while trying to lead normal lives.

Books like The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher and The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs live and breathe paranormal fantasy. They show us a world that’s eerily familiar—except, just beneath the surface, magic and monsters change everything.

Paranormal fantasy reminds us that the supernatural is never far away. Sometimes, it’s hiding just behind a door you were never meant to open.

Paranormal fantasy in the Elementals Universe

Tarja Titan by TC MartiNote, I said Elementals Universe and not Renegades Epic, and there’s a reason for this. The Renegades Epic only comprises six series: Elementals of Nordica, Terrian Chronicles, Chronicles of Rondure, Sentrys of Terrene, Catenarian Chronicles, and Cymraeg Tales. But, the Elementals Universe goes beyond that, with works like Arcane Elemental Academy.

So, you’ll see at least a touch of paranormal elements in Arcane and many, many more books outside of just the Epic. But, if we’re speaking strictly about the Epic, then the real question is, where does paranormal fantasy not reside. It’s in every book series mentioned above, but if you’re looking for it to fit strictly in a series, I can’t give you that.

And it’s because not one, but two series fit the genre overall: Terrian Chronicles and Catenarian Chronicles. Both protagonists, Tarja Titan and Kaija Jokiharu, see and interact with spirits. And Terrian Chronicles takes things even further, as you’ll find those witches, vampires, werewolves, and other shifters.

So, if you’re looking for something strictly in the paranormal realm, roll with Terrian Chronicles. But, if you want a series in which my writing has ‘matured’ since its earlier days, Catenarian Chronicles is where it’s at.
