Ranking each Renegades Epic series in standalone power
The Renegades Epic is built like the MCU — six series, six tones, countless crossovers — but each one stands on its own feet.
A shared universe means you’re going to see characters cross over from one series to another in varying frequencies. But you’ll also find mentions of other worlds in that universe, their respective societies, and whispers of their political leaders.
So, of the six series in the Renegades Epic, which one boasts more cross over than its peers, and which can you read as a standalone? Keep reading and you’ll find out.
6 – Chronicles of Rondure: Grimdark dystopian fantasy
Literally from the Prologue, savvy readers realize that Mina Hirai’s story begins with her watching her best friend, Tash Holmes, disappear through a portal to another world. By Chapter 3, readers are going to know that Chronicles of Rondure is indeed part of a shared universe.
5 – Terrian Chronicles: Paranormal and small-town fantasy
Like Chronicles of Rondure, you’re going to know early in the Terrian Chronicles that there is more to the series than what I’m showing you. Unlike Chronicles of Rondure, it’s more of something I gloss over, and it doesn’t affect the overall story to the same degree.
4 – Cymraeg Tales: Old-world coming of age fantasy
Early in Cymraeg Tales, Caer Cymraeg tells Mali LaSalle about the existence of other worlds. But, since it’s coming from the point-of-view of Mali, who is an impoverished outcast, she knows as much about those other worlds as the reader if Cymraeg Tales is their first rodeo in my work. Further, toward the end of Book I, Spirit and Fire, I show the reader one of those other worlds.
3 – Sentrys of Terrene: Post-apocalyptic military fantasy
Book I, The Rebellion Awakens, stands alone. But in Book II, I share more insights of the Five Worlds, and Sabre Kjaergaard even runs into a few characters who made their first appearances in other series. If you only read Sentrys of Terrene, you’ll have questions, but they won’t take away from the reading experience.
2 – Elementals of Nordica: Military science fantasy
Elementals of Nordica crosses over with main characters from other series and I give the reader a crash course into the Five Worlds. But since they learn about them as the main protagonist, Sion Zona, does, there’s little, if any, confusion.
1 – Catenarian Chronicles: Dark paranormal fantasy

You could read the entire Catenarian Chronicles series without picking up any other one of my books and never know it’s in a shared universe. While characters from other series appear, they have their own story arcs within this series.
If you’re a reader who doesn’t like shared universes and would rather read a standalone series, Catenarian Chronicles is it. And if you’re into the dark paranormal fantasy genre, then Book I, Cursed Mage, will be right up your alley.
Find out how Kaija Jokiharju discovered her Mage ability, what gives her the unique ability to speak with spirits, and what kind of dark secrets have been kept from her for nearly two decades. Check out Cursed Mage now.
