7 ways Hogwarts and Arcane are nowhere near the same
Hogwarts and Arcane Elemental Academy may be eerily similar, but there are stark differences between the two magical schools.
Both schools are alike in so many ways, but I learned early that I couldn’t recreate Harry Potter. That would be a losing battle. So, instead of piggybacking off of J.K. Rowling’s legendary work, I wanted something that was familiar to readers, yet carried a unique vibe.
How unique is Arcane when compared to Hogwarts? Here are seven ways the two magic schools differ.
1 – Arcane is way more technologically advanced
Let’s face it: Hogwarts is archaic. The school supplies list calls for parchment, quills, and other ancient relics. Though I’ll give it this: It has a gold standard, and that’s one archaic thing I’d take! While Arcane doesn’t have a gold standard, it does have sensible students and faculty who aren’t fond of using tech-advanced ways to make monetary transactions.
2 – Arcane isn’t a castle
Think of Arcane as a high school campus, and a high-end one, but made with ancient, weathered limestone. It’s got a quaint vibe but with seriously modern aesthetics. It doesn’t have that towering and frightening sensation Hogwarts carries, even if many of us found a “home” there.
3 – Arcane is part of the village it’s located in
Accounts vary for how far Hogwarts is from Hogsmeade. But that’s not the case with Arcane. Instead, it’s located right on the edge of Aurora Village, an Americana-like town nestled in the rolling hills and surrounded by endless countryside.
4 – Arcane only teaches elemental magic
Elemental magic is a thing at Hogwarts, even if there’s not a class dedicated to it. As for Arcane, it’s all about elemental magic. Students can control the four classical elements, and some can tap into the fifth element of spirit. Every class is based around elemental magic, whether it’s history, rune lore, or even sciences.
5 – Non-Elementals know about Arcane
Elemental Society isn’t secretive in Arcane Elemental Academy. Non-Elementals, better known as the Acrax, live around and interact with Elementals. Some even work for the academy in varying roles. And no, they’re not looked down on as Squibs or Muggles are at times in the Wizarding World.
6 – Arcane is privately-owned and operated
Hogwarts may be a Ministry of Magic-owned state school, but Arcane isn’t. Instead, it’s got 32 private schools within it. And if demand grows for a 33rd school, guess what? It expands. So, who owns Arcane? Think of Arcane as a profit-sharing institution. The owners and administrators of each school own Arcane.
7 – Arcane isn’t the only Elemental school
Arcane is one of hundreds of Elemental schools in the nation of Etharia. That said, it’s the only school located in the Northern Region, and it’s subjected to zero regulation except for its consumers.
Points 6 and 7 are the main reasons I wrote The Arcane Prophecy. I wasn’t about to write a book centered around a state school like Hogwarts. Instead, I wanted market-based education, and how it can work in a consumer-regulated society.
Now that you know the differences between Arcane and Hogwarts, meet my protagonist, Yote Diamondback, and find out why she ended up at Arcane in the first place. You might be surprised that she wanted to attend another magic school, but fate had other ideas. Catch the first three chapters now, and brace yourself for libertarian fiction that bites back.
