Quinn Cozens and Yui Kikuchi sprint down a muddy forest road toward a floodlit prison compound hidden in the backwoods, with guard towers, tents, barbed wire, and heavy fog creating a tense survival-horror atmosphere.

A prison lurking in the backwoods of Ohioville, Pennsylvania

While there’s no prison lurking in the backwoods of Ohioville, Pennsylvania in real life, it made for one heck of a setting in Beyond the Lost.

Mystery Mile is a colloquial name for this allegedly haunted-ass stretch of road in Ohioville, Pennsylvania — the first mile of Kelly Road (which connects Ohioville to Industry) or sometimes Wolf Run Road.

They call it one of the most haunted locations in the region, dubbed by some as “the most democratic of the haunted places” because it’s a public place. For most haunted places, I need to buck the ancap in me and sneak onto private property like two characters did in an unrelated short story available in the Vault VIP Club. But we can’t all be 100% goody-two-shoes all the time.

The legend centers on the first mile of the road, where paranormal activity ends beyond that point. Key reported phenomena include:

  • Animal Aggression: Docile farm animals and pets get violent, rabid, or aggressive, often chasing people or destroying property.

  • Apparitions: Witnesses report glowing white figures, shadowy presences, and ghost children dressed in colonial or pioneer clothing, often with angry expressions.

  • Atmospheric Anomalies: Visitors describe heavy fogs, strange noises from the surrounding woods, and a sense of malice or foul moods.

Theories range from curses Indians put on the land when they were forced out, to Satanic cult rituals, or the spirits of a couple killed in a horse-and-carriage accident in the 1800s.

While some locals attribute the name to an unfinished road project from the 1940s, the supernatural reputation has attracted paranormal investigators and urban legend enthusiasts.

The truth is even more terrifying in Beyond the Lost

In Beyond the Lost Assault, there are no ghosts or animals going crazy. But Quinn Cozens and them might wish that was the case. Terrorist cells who destroyed and overran the West in one cataclysmic event hold prominent people hostage in that prison he finds out about during Assault’s second act.

Those who were poor or working class bit the dust during the first two phases of the raid. But if you had money or if They — those who sponsored those terrorist cells — saw value in you, They hauled your ass to that prison.

There, you’d live in a tent, eat what They gave you, and worked to uphold the place while awaiting re-entry into a “new” society. If you were a woman, chances were, Their henchmen snatched you up in the night, right from under your family’s noses. You wouldn’t return. Something worse was in store for you.

If you were a man or a lucky woman, They’d subject you to something far, far worse. Something so terrifying that you’d lose your sense of self. You’d just exist as a means to an end for Them. Nothing more than a cog in Their machine. One that remade society in Their image and with Them at the helm.

So yeah, Quinn and them wish those paranormal legends were true.
