How Spirit and Fire connects to Cursed Mage
Spirit and Fire and Cursed Mage unfold in different worlds and time periods, but share the same fight against power, control, and lies that keep people chained.
They take place in different worlds, but ancient bloodlines rule them both. That said, Spirit and Fire and Cursed Mage were always cut from the same cloth. They share a pulse beneath the setting, a worldview beneath the plot, and girls who’ve been lied to sit in the center of both stories.
In Spirit and Fire, Mali LaSalle is a Spirit Master born into the lowest caste. She’s an Untouchable forced to wear her bloodline’s scars. In Cursed Mage, Kaija Jokiharju is a Water Mage raised in ignorance of her true heritage, only to uncover a secret lineage that puts her life in danger. Both girls are rare, marked, and find themselves hunted.
Each story stems from an oppressive (and similar) system
Mali lives under a monarchy where faith and class are weaponized to keep outcasts like her in line. Kaija navigates a world where elite Mage factions operating behind political masks regulate and conceal Elemental (Mage) power. In both books, authority doesn’t protect, even if it pretends otherwise. Instead, it controls, manipulates, and punishes.
But neither girl backs down. Mali, hardened from a brutal childhood and her sister’s death, uses every skill she learned in Jungleland to survive. Kaija digs into the secrets surrounding her and tears open the lies built around her. Both face systems designed to break them, and both start pushing back harder than anyone expects.
Elemental magic ties both stories to the same universe, even if they occur in different worlds and are centuries apart. Spirit, Water, Blood, and the other six elements all trace back to the same origin, whether channeled through swords or hidden behind university walls. The rules haven’t changed. What has changed is who controls them and who’s willing to break them.
And just as important are the connections they’re not supposed to make. In Spirit and Fire, Mali crosses paths with a crown prince, the very symbol of the system that branded her. In Cursed Mage, Kaija finds herself in the crosshairs of a powerful Mage Master, only to discover his political faction may be secretly protecting her. Both girls are forced to decide if they can trust someone raised to be their enemy.
Tying Cursed Mage and Spirit and Fire together is the spiritual layer
Voices, visions, flashbacks, and dark forces haunt these girls. What pulls at them isn’t destiny, as you may cross in so many other tales. It’s control disguised as purpose. And once they see it for what it is, the only way forward is defiance. That’s when these stories grow even murkier. They ask: what happens when a lie becomes law, and when someone chooses to challenge it?
So if you’ve read one and not the other, don’t be fooled by the surface. Yeah, Spirit and Fire falls into the old world, and Cursed Mage takes place in a soft surveillance state, but they boast the same themes, heartbeat, and war (no, seriously). They’re just fought on different fronts. Check them out at The Rebel Lore Vault.
