Elemental magic dominates as the magical system in the Renegades Epic
Why does elemental magic drive the action in the Renegades Epic and Elementals Universe? Discover the system that fuels conflict and power.
When most readers crack open a fantasy novel, they expect a magical system built around wizards casting incantations, enchanted swords, or ancient prophecies steeped in forgotten lore. While those elements occasionally appear in the Renegades Epic, especially swords, they don’t define it. Elemental magic does—and there’s a reason it holds that top spot.
Unlike many traditional fantasy series, the Renegades Epic places elemental power at the core of its worldbuilding. You’ll see it everywhere: from the explosive wind barriers in Wind Wielder to the molten chaos of fire yielders in Spirit and Fire.
Elemental magic plays a leading role in this saga for a reason. I chose it thanks to a few inspirations listed below, and because it gave me endless ways to build characters and shape my worlds.
How Avatar sparked it all
If you’ve ever watched Avatar: The Last Airbender, you’ve seen elemental storytelling at its best. The show transformed fire, water, air, and earth into natural extensions of each character’s being. Watching benders shape their environment with nothing but a movement and a mindset changed how I saw magic altogether.
That series lit the fuse. It showed me how elemental magic could be versatile and emotionally resonant. I didn’t want characters who simply used magic, since it’s been done thousands of times at this point.
I wanted characters whose powers showed you who they were. If they yielded fire in Cymraeg Tales, I didn’t even need to mention Caer Cymraeg. Spirit with a bit of an edge? You knew it was Mali LaSalle without me telling you. Spirit, but with a more conservative, methodic approach? Must be Dianna Norsk.
That philosophy became the heartbeat of the Renegades Epic and its extended Elementals Universe.
Why nine elements, not four?
While Avatar offered a fine blueprint, I didn’t want to stop at the classical four. Again, we’ve seen that play out far too many times. The Renegades Epic demanded more depth, more options for internal conflict, strategy, and storytelling. So I expanded the list to nine.
Here’s how it breaks down: Wind, Fire, Earth, Water, Spirit, Blood, Metal, Wood, and Smoke. Each one offers something unique. Metal morphers bring brute strength and industrial intensity. Blood Mages channel the raw vitality of life and death. Then, they make opponents bleed.
Spirit Masters, rare and prophetic, glimpse timelines that others can’t. Smoke, often overlooked in other fantasy systems, became a symbol of deception and transformation. Even Wood, usually seen as passive, takes on new life as a force of growth, entrapment, and rebirth.
By introducing these additional elements, I opened the door to dozens of layered, morally complex characters, and a vast network of magical conflict that feels alive and evolving.
Other magical systems exist
While elemental power drives the action, it’s not the only form of magic shaping the world. The Renegades Epic features a range of magical traditions beyond elemental forces. Some characters wield arcane spells, others harness supernatural strength or bloodlines. These systems exist on the fringes—less common, but no less dangerous.
In the Terrian Chronicles, for example, you’ll encounter witches and wizards who cast hexes and brew enchantments. You’ll meet fae, vampires, werewolves, and the legendary hunters trained to kill them all.
Those other magical beings don’t get as much airtime, but they do exist. They enrich the Five Worlds without overcrowding it.
For instance, in Spirit and Water (Book II of Cymraeg Tales), hunters make a brief but pivotal appearance. Their presence reminds readers that while Elementals dominate global politics and warfare, they aren’t the only power players in this universe.
Where power meets purpose
Elemental magic stands at the heart of the Renegades Epic. It fuels the action, shapes the characters, and drives the stories forward with every turn. Each element reflects more than a power—it reveals a character’s mindset, values, and approach to the challenges they face.
This system offers clarity, depth, and flexibility. It allows for dramatic conflict, personal evolution, and high-stakes political intrigue. In the Elementals Universe, magic follows clear purpose and intent. Elemental power drives the rhythm of the story and defines its core.
