Martin Richards, a shaved-headed authoritarian colony leader in glasses and worn survivalist gear, stands in front of a grim Appalachian woodland compound while Quinn Cozens glowers from the background.

Small-government conservative or dictatorial theocrat? Martin Richards

Martin Richards may be the most complex character in Beyond the Lost Assault. Is he a small-government conservative or something more notorious?

  • Parents: Unknown
  • Children: At least one unnamed son
  • Fun Fact: Martin was the brains behind the colony
  • Hogwarts House: Slytherin
  • Occupation: Colony leader
  • Birthday: April 20th, 1983

Quinn Cozens met Martin Richards years before Beyond the Lost’s events. Quinn and Martin were gym friends, they ran trails together, and agreed on a plethora of political issues. In 2020, a 19-year-old Quinn Cozens and 37-year-old Martin routinely bucked mask mandates and draconian restrictions.

If someone snapped at them, they snapped right back. And if the issue persisted, Quinn and Martin took their business elsewhere. Those two would’ve chosen arrest if it meant resisting mandates. For them, time in the county or the state would’ve been “time well spent.”

Martin and Quinn were different small-government conservatives

The two didn’t agree on every issue. Quinn was a strong believer in separation of church and state, and he had a non-interventionist stance on foreign policy. While pro-life, Quinn never believed in abortion bans because of the likelihood of a black market opening.

Martin was more theocratic. He wanted policies and mandates against people of faiths outside Judeo-Christianity. Martin believed that the Bible — not the Constitution or even something closer to the Articles of Confederation — must dictate society.

Finally, Martin had zero tolerance for nations Fox News told him were America’s enemies. His solution? Violence. “Kill them all,” he’d say. And Martin, ironically, all but defied politicians hell-bent on using Christianity as leverage.

Martin’s colony is a dictatorship wearing different skin

It’s not long after Quinn rushes into Martin’s colony does he realize something. The Martin he knew wasn’t there. This version of Martin was stricter, more director than friend. Martin also had a chain of command. One that enforced more than just his regimented way of running the colony — where Quinn would be up before sunrise, train all morning, eat a small lunch, and train well into the evening.

Neither Quinn nor anyone else chooses how they serve Martin’s colony. Martin is the judge and jury. And if one doesn’t like their assignment, then too bad. Martin knows all, because everybody who joins the colony must pass through him, get their work assignments, and know the exact time to clock in, clock out, and when to eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner in the mess hall.

If one refuses to comply too many times, Martin will release them. And that phrase has a notorious meaning. Meet him in Beyond the Lost Horizon, where he appears during the adrenaline-pumping climactic scene. And you will really get to know him in Beyond the Lost Assault.
