A graphic depiction of a wendigo wandering the woods in the winter. Skulls and bones of human remains lie before it.

What’s a wendigo and why does it appear in my YA fantasy?

The Arcane Prophecy takes a dark turn when a wendigo invades the area. What is this creature, and why does it make a grand entrance?

Let’s get one thing straight: I didn’t include the wendigo in The Arcane Prophecy because it’s trendy or creepy-looking. I did it because this monster—this legend—deserves better than the bastardized antler-headed deer demon you’ve probably seen on Netflix.

This post isn’t about spoilers. It’s about reclaiming the real wendigo, exploring the lore behind it, highlighting a few eerie sightings, and explaining why it belongs in the world of The Arcane Prophecy—where cryptids, legends, and myths aren’t just stories, as Yote Diamondback will learn.

What is a wendigo?

The original wendigo comes from Algonquian folklore—specifically Ojibwe, Cree, and Innu cultures.

It’s not some antlered forest spirit. It’s a malevolent, cannibalistic spirit—a former human who gave in to greed, gluttony, or desperation (often via cannibalism) and transformed into something inhuman.

Here’s what sets the wendigo apart:

  • Gaunt, emaciated appearance, yet towering and unnaturally strong

  • Eyes burning with hunger, but never satisfied

  • Symbol of insatiable consumption, not just flesh, but power and spirit

  • Spirit-possession or transformation—in some versions, people become wendigos

  • Associated with cold, wilderness, and desolation, especially during harsh winters

It’s less “scary beast in the woods” and more “you are what you devour.”

The modern pop-culture antlered version? That’s a recent invention, likely from European horned forest spirits like Herne or the Cernunnos archetype. It looks cool, sure, but it’s not the real thing.

Alleged wendigo sightings

You know I’m not here to tell you what to believe. But if you dig into North American history, especially the more forgotten corners, there are some chilling accounts that make you wonder.

1. Swift Runner (1878)

A Cree man in Alberta who murdered and ate his family during a particularly brutal winter. When arrested, he claimed a wendigo possessed him. This was one of the first cases where Westerners used the term wendigo psychosis.

2. Hudson Bay Company Reports

In the 1800s, traders and trappers wrote in their journals about men going mad in the snow, driven by a supernatural hunger. Some believed these were cases of men becoming wendigos after isolation and starvation.

3. Northern Minnesota (20th century)

Locals in remote regions whispered about something stalking the woods—tall, gaunt, fast-moving, and foul-smelling. Hunters vanished, their camps torn to shreds. The descriptions didn’t match bears or wolves.

4. Reddit & Paranormal Forums (Recent Years)

Modern accounts flood in from campers and hikers who report seeing pale humanoid figures, hearing unearthly screams, or feeling watched, especially in deep wilderness where there’s no cell service, no backup, and no easy way out.

Why the wendigo is in The Arcane Prophecy

In The Arcane Prophecy, the magical world doesn’t discriminate. If a legend has power, it exists. Period. That includes:

  • Cryptids like the Mothman or Jersey Devil

  • Mythical creatures like dragons or kelpies

  • And yes, folk monsters like the wendigo, especially those tied to elemental imbalance, spiritual corruption, or ancient curses

Think of every myth you’ve ever heard of. In The Arcane Prophecy and Arcane Elemental Academy, every one of them exists. And that’s what makes the work’s background so frightening.

I don’t throw monsters into my stories for shock value

Every cryptid and mythological being in The Arcane Prophecy carries symbolic weight. Some are ancient protectors, others are chaotic forces.

And some, like the wendigo, are mirrors. They show us what we become when we lose our humanity.

And in a world where every story might be true? You’d better hope the wendigo stays a story.

But before you meet that rotting cryptid of human flesh, join Yote Diamondback during her final days of middle school at the Kenborne Elemental Academy in Arcane Awakenings.

Get to know her, her rival sibling, and find out about an eye-opening incident that became Yote’s red pill.
