Yui Kikuchi had one goal in Beyond the Lost Horizon: perform at a concert venue outside some random city called Pittsburgh between stops in New York and Chicago, then get on with her life. Instead, she stood on Ground Zero, and the venue deteriorated into a hellscape.
She never put much time into thinking how her career as a K-pop metal idol would end, or at least get put on hold. A terrorist attack at a show her band hosted? One in the middle of freaking nowhere? If she were a gambler, she would have lost millions.
After all the hard work and sacrifice she made: leaving her homeland in Japan as a young teen, going through years of intense training most of her peers bowed out of, and sticking to daily routines someone else controlled, it ended in seconds. She had fame, even if she needed to be completely subservient to her agency to achieve and maintain that fame.
Yui believed discipline was safety, that obedience guaranteed protection, and that the systems surrounding her—managers, militaries, nations—would always intervene when things went wrong.
Like Quinn Cozens, Yui Kikuchi lost everything in Beyond the Lost Horizon
She had it all when the sun came up on that hot day in July 2030. When the sun started setting, she had nothing. Yui crouched over, hiding in the trees, her eyes scanning for a hint of her bandmates and bodyguards, but they weren’t around. Nobody came except for a man with pale skin, dark ringlet hair, olive green eyes, and a short, but lean and proportional build.
But did it matter when he urged her to come with him? Quinn Cozens, or whatever his name was? In seconds, this deadly terrorist attack turned her world upside down.
Still, she would get out of it, right? The American military would surely intervene and get her on a plane back home. They had to. She was still Yui Kikuchi. Still a girl who commanded attention and respect.
She only had to get through this mess, and she would be safe again. Or so she hoped. Because, unfortunately for Yui, she was dead wrong.
