Kaija battling the Huotaja, a fixture in the Renegades Epic

Every time the Catenarians appear in the Renegades Epic: Part I

The Catenarians appear all over the place in the Renegades Epic. So much, that this one will have a Part II a few years down the road.

The Renegades Epic is a shared universe comprising six series across a slew of fantasy subgenres with dystopian, science fiction, and military elements that smart, sane people will love. As for those looking for mindless, formulaic fiction? They can move on to something that fits their limited mental capacity.

Anyway, across the Epic, one group of people travels the Five Worlds far and wide, and they’re from the world of Catenary, which is the home of my Catenarian Chronicles series.

This group of Catenarians that appear all over the Five Worlds is the Huotaja, but they’re often called Mercenaries or Merks, named after the political party they serve.

Anyway, throughout the first half of the Renegades Epic, you’ll see them appear in five of my books that are outside the Catenarian Chronicles. Below, I got a brief rundown of which books they appear in.

Wind Master

The Catnarians make their first appearance in the Renegades Epic when Valkyrie wakes up from a coma in Wind Master. Catenarian doctors from the superpower nation of Vimsinew conducted invasive experiments on her, and it sets the ultimate stage for her character arc.

Valkyrie, from what she’s able to decipher, believes she’s on a military base. But from what I imply in Cursed Mage and reveal in Astray Mage, Valk’s probably trapped in an institution. And as you may know, those places are pretty f*cking brutal.

Note: This is the only instance in which the Catenarians are not Huotaja.

Liza Fury: Catch 22

Some libertarians may accuse me of utilizing “safe practices” in Liza Fury: Catch 22, because we find out Liza’s bisexual. But trust me, I wasn’t using tokenism here. Screw that garbage. Nah, Liza just fell for a girl who was born feral and, later, contracts lycanthropy.

They might also accuse me of spreading feminazism because Liza and her girlfriend, Kress Conway, both carry that kickass, strong female protagonist vibe. And you see it in full force when they’re kicking ass and taking names against not any Earthly opponent, but a group of terrifying Mercenaries who stand over seven feet tall and weigh well over three hundred pounds.

But no, I don’t got time for feminazi sh*t. Liza and Kress were just in ‘ride or die’ mode. And since Liza’s arguably the most powerful character I’ve ever created, those two were gonna ride. Oh, and by the way, Liza’s a lowercase ‘l’ libertarian, and she’s politically incorrect and sarcastic AF.

Trust me, she’s not scared to offend. Nor is she afraid to go tell someone she does offend to go grab an adult coloring book and climb back up inside their mother. And if their mom’s dead? Liza’ll smirk, look ’em in the eye, and say, “So is mine.”

Civil War

Mina Hirai’s another strong female protagonist, but she’s got a few allies in Rokko Streets and Amiya Na-yeon. She also has a stalker in Civil War named Ellsworth Landingham.

And guess what? Ellsworth comes straight from the world of Catenary as opposed to the World of Rondure. And yes, the ‘w’ in world is lowercase on purpose when referring to Catenary.

Anyway, Ellsworth’s another one of those notorious Mercenaries. He’s just as tall as those entities Liza and Kress fought against, and every bit as powerful.

Spirit and Fire

They’re called Merks in Spirit and Fire, but they’re every bit as big and scary. Caer Cymaeg and Malikki “Mali” LaSalle cross these Merks in Act I and fight them off on multiple occasions. But they ain’t done just yet, as our dynamic duo runs into a freaking trap later in the book.

And, in case you didn’t figure it out, those Merks make life hell for the pair. I mean, these people are a fighting force trained to kill without mercy. They got their work cut out for them.

Rise of the Sentrys

Yes, Sentrys, and not Sentries. Anyway, you’ll find a brigade of them in the final installment of my Sentrys of Terrene trilogy. And yep, they’re even more ruthless when given a chance to invoke torture.

They might be more ruthless in Cursed Mage, but in Rise of the Sentrys, you get a nice little clue of how bloodthirsty these people really are, and, when given a chance, they won’t fight fairly. It’s almost as if they’re trained to be sadists.

Ready to meet these Mercenaries, or the Huotaja? You’re going to get a big-ass dose of them in Cursed Mage, I’ll tell you that much. And for a girl like Kaija, who’s just starting to grow into her Mage ability, she’s got a steep hill to climb once these people target her.
