Setting of Beyond the Lost Horizon: Quinn’s home away from home
Beyond the Lost Horizon is a dystopian survival work at its core, but one full of nostalgia and longing. Quinn’s home away from home proves it.
Quinn Cozens and Yui Kikuchi needed a place to lay low. They knew terrorists swarmed America, and that they’d start overrunning larger urban areas before moving to smaller cities.
For Quinn, this meant he had one safe house located at the edge of a small village in Eastern Ohio. A place he cherished during his formative and teenage years, before drifting apart when he reached his twenties.
It wasn’t a place with painful memories, so forget that trope. Quinn has fond memories here, but he shoulders a ton of guilt. When his grandparents moved beyond their respective primes, Quinn put himself and his desires before all. He cut out everything that didn’t cater to his ambitions.
That included his childhood home away from home.
Memories hit Quinn like a freight train in Beyond the Lost Horizon
If Quinn didn’t have Yui with him, there’s no way he would’ve hidden out here following the worst terrorist attack on American soil. The memories were too distant, and his regret too great.
Had Quinn crossed the Mirror of Erised, he would’ve seen himself in his early twenties, working an average day job, and spending time with his aging grandparents. His little sister, Jackie, would’ve been there with him. Chances are, they would’ve cried together when the inevitable drew near. All while sharing a few laughs at the fonder memories.
Yet, in Beyond the Lost Horizon, the home seemed to echo the situation Quinn and Yui were caught in. The place was dark, empty, and silent, as it had been since his grandfather passed before the novel’s events.
What was once a place of pure joy, comfort, and security had become a place to hide. And a place where Quinn knew he couldn’t let his guard down for anything. A complete one-eighty from his younger years, where the group of photos on the living room’s far side wall show a happier, healthier time.
But the real question is: will Quinn hold it together to keep himself on task? Find out how he handles being back in his childhood home away from home in Beyond the Lost Horizon.
