Kaija Jokiharju was never meant to live a normal life

Before she was branded a Cursed Mage, Kaija Jokiharju was just a scholarship student trying to escape her father’s addictions

If you’ve read Cursed Mage, you know who Kaija Jokiharju is. And if you read its two-year prequel, Deceived Mage, you’ll know that, in the very last scene, I hinted at Kaija’s coming influence in the most subtle ways.

Whether you already know Kaija’s first story or if you’ve only read the two-year prequel featuring Ella Kinnunen, it never hurts to get a background on the star of my dark paranormal fantasy, Catenarian Chronicles.

  • Element: Water/Spirit
  • Parents: Elias and Eevi Jokiharju
  • Relatives: Olivia Jokiharju (aunt), Vaino Jokiharju (uncle), Isla of Marjalainen (ancestor)
  • Fun Fact: I based Kaija on World of the Gateway’s Jess Ballard, just with a different personality
  • Hogwarts House: Gryffindor
  • Named After: Finnish pop singer, Kaija Koo, and former Buffalo Sabres defenseman, Henri Jokiharju

Kaija Jokiharju’s profile and bio at a glance

Cursed Mage, a dark paranormal fantasy by TC MartiAh, yes, we recently covered a ‘good’ Slytherin in Ella, plus a Ravenclaw in Kaarina Taivalkoski. And now, it’s time to talk about someone who would’ve been a Gryffindor if the tale were Harry Potter.

Born to Elias and Eevi Jokiharju, Kaija never knew her mother, since her parents split shortly after she was born.

Though she never knew it, Kaija was born into the prominent Jokiharju family. But her mom and dad gave up that prominence when they realized early Kaija would be more than just a Mage, explaining their eventual split and Elias’ subsequent drug and alcohol addiction.

Elias took refuge on Vimsinew’s West Coast, surrounding himself with Mages who’d also defected from their rankings.

These Mages Masked Elias’ and Kaija’s life forces, allowing them to live as if they were part of the non-Mage, also known as Moor, masses for the next eighteen years.

A rough childhood and adolescence

As for Kaija, growing up was a double-edged sword. While she was an exceptional student in school, and one smart enough to ultimately land at Fenn University, she also found herself cleaning up after her father. She made friends, and hung out with low-level criminals, and got involved with gangs.

Kaija evolved into a more hardened version than many eighteen-year-olds would care to become. But still, her scholarship to Fenn in Vimsinew’s Northeast Region gave her a way out—the stability she craved and had never gotten during her home life.

Yet, it was during this time, she started to have disturbing, recurring dreams, a sign that the Mages’ Masking techniques began wearing off.

A Cursed Mage rises from the abyss

While Elias secretly searched for a way to keep the Masking going strong, he also knew disturbances in the aether from Kaija put him in a conundrum. One night when he left to seek answers following his usual binge drinking episode at a bar, a fatal accident killed him.

But, before Elias’ Mages could find a clever way to Mask Kaija after she surpassed her eighteenth birthday, her Uncle Vaino, Elias’ estranged brother, brought her to the Northeast.

And that’s where Cursed Mage begins. Pick up your copy now.
