The Wise Young Mentor of Arcane: Rayne Grimbane
Rayne Grimbane isn’t your typical mentor archetype. She’s neither old nor gray. But don’t let her relative youth fool you.
- Parents: Lox and Wynter Grimbane
- Fun Fact: Rayne’s last name was originally spelled Grimbayne
- Hogwarts House: Slytherin
- Arcane School: Scorpii
- Birthday: Nov. 28
Rayne Grimbane may be the youngest teacher in Scorpii School, and one of the youngest at the Arcane Elemental Academy. She has long black hair, pale skin, a kind face, a lean build, and a charismatic demeanor. Grimbane is almost always seen wearing black with forest green mixed in.
There’s hardly a soul Yote Diamondback respects more than Rayne. Rayne is the first teacher Yote meets and both are immediately taken with one another. Yote admires Rayne’s teaching style, and Rayne’s impressed with Yote’s talent in casting runic elemental magic spells.
Rayne Grimbane is an amalgam of Harry Potter characters
It’s hard to pinpoint any one character or real-life individual I based Rayne on. She can go in different directions, especially when making Harry Potter comparisons.
Characters like Remus Lupin (more of a friend than a teacher), and even Severus Snape (stylistic preferences), are all present in Rayne.
She also possesses a ridiculously high IQ, but not so much that she can’t relate to the students she teaches. Her high intellect had its drawbacks when she was younger. And relating to her students now was her biggest hurdle when she studied to teach at Arcane.
Yet, Rayne learned how far to push them, further individualizing each student’s learning experience, something the Arcane Elemental Academy is well-known for.
Grimbane plays a major but underrated role
Like many main character/mentor relationships, only subtle hints of Rayne’s role exist early. She slides into a few scenes and exits quickly before her role jumps roughly 60 percent of the way through The Arcane Prophecy.
She and Yote cross paths in a most random place, and it’s where she offers cryptic but reassuring words of wisdom. Those words set the stage not only for the rest of the book, but the entire series.
You won’t meet Rayne Grimbane until roughly the 35 percent mark of The Arcane Prophecy. But if you read the book’s first three chapters, you’ll catch how I set the stage for Yote to ultimately cross paths with this young but wise mentor. Go see how it plays out.
