A young woman with long dark red hair and pale skin stands at the edge of a quiet lake at dusk, facing the viewer and holding a sword. She wears an emerald green jacket, and a castle-like university glows faintly across the water under a cloudy sky.

What Katri Lehtinen represents in Astray Mage

Katri Lehtinen is a newcomer in Astray Mage, Book II in Catenarian Chronicles. And she might just become an instant fan favorite.

What is a fan favorite? Background noise, but damn good background noise. They possess a trait, or traits, that make them un-freaking-forgettable. In Astray Mage, that’s Katri Lehtinen.

  • Known Relatives: Jippu and Aron Tervomaa, two unnamed brothers
  • Element: Earth
  • Hogwarts House: Hufflepuff
  • Fun Facts: Katri was supposed to be nothing more than a strict background character. Her role evolved when she became Lilja’s first official friend outside Kaija and Ella.

Katri is a quiet outlier. She’s not a revolutionary, a social climber, or a victim. But that makes her indispensable.

In Astray Mage, Katri anchors everything. Her presence says: There are still people in this world who value others because they’re people. Not because of their current status, family name, or political utility.

She’s one of the few at Linna Yliopisto who doesn’t walk around masked. Metaphorically speaking, that is. She graces the corridors talking, laughing, and putting herself on the same level with Lilja. If anyone helps Lilja understand the world, it’s Katri.

Katri Lehtinen is the quiet empath

Katri observes, listens, and gets it. She never treats Lilja like a charity case or a curiosity. She lets her be human. And in a school crawling with backstabbers and cliques, that’s a radical thing.

Katri doesn’t play power games, nor does she suck up to the popular Mage Masters or flaunt her rank. She shows up, does the work, and treats others with decency. But her kindness isn’t weakness.

When Lilja turns up missing in Astray Mage, Katri breaks from a clique she hangs out with by association, not from friendship, and lets Kaija know. She’s also unafraid to chastise the Augury Party, despite her family’s high status within it.

Her place in Linna Yliopisto’s complicated social web

  • With Lilja: She’s the first person who truly sees Lilja as someone worth knowing. She brings stability where Lilja has only known chaos.

  • With Kaija: Kaija’s not easily impressed, and rightfully so. But she notices Katri early because Katri doesn’t want anything from her. She’s one of the rare few Kaija doesn’t have to be on guard around, something Kaija’s grown rather used to throughout her life.

  • With Ella Kinnunen: Katri keeps it civil, but she’s more distant with Ella. She just chooses not to engage in some of the mind games Ella plays, despite her cordial relationship with our resident Slytherin.

Her Earth Mastery and mindset

Katri’s no prodigy, and she doesn’t pretend to be. She’s an Earth Master, but she’s not loud about it. In a story full of students trying to climb their way up through power or legacy, Katri takes a different path, referring to her Earth Mastery as “playing in dirt.”

She’s proof that decency doesn’t have to mean weakness, and that you can be kind without being gullible. You can be present without being passive, and that’s a rarity these days and in the Catenarian Chronicles.

Catch Katri Lehtinen in Astray Mage

Astray Mage, a dark paranormal fantasy by TC MartiKatri Lehtinen might not make headlines in Mage Society unless it’s by association. But in a place like Linna Yliopisto, where lies wear cloaks and truth is a currency nobody can afford, Katri’s honesty is magic in itself.

If you’re reading Astray Mage and wondering why a character like her matters, it’s because she reminds us that some people still know how to be genuine.

As I mentioned so many times in this article, you can catch Katri in Astray Mage. But, if you’d like to know more about just what the hell’s going on in that book, make sure you read Book I – Cursed Mage before entering the corridors of Linna Yliopisto.
