A tall woman in a black leather trench coat stands on a wooded ridge overlooking a misty Appalachian-style village at dusk. Warm lights glow from the homes below as fog curls through the valley. The woman watches the town in silence, holding a faintly glowing blue device, creating an atmosphere of tension and elemental magical realism.

Arcane’s Most Dangerous Woman: Cassara Darkwood

Cassara Darkwood is the biggest enigma in The Arcane Prophecy. She’s Yote Diamondback’s stalker and an antagonistic character.

  • Parents: Cass and Sara Darkwood
  • Fun Fact: Cassara was one of the most gifted students in Arcane’s history
  • Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw
  • Arcane School: Scorpii
  • Birthday: Sep. 15

Cassara Darkwood boasts a striking appearance, something Yote Diamondback notes the second she spots the woman. Darkwood is a towering figure, standing close to six feet tall, with a robust, but lean build, blonde hair in the shape of a bob cut, and piercing eyes. She always dons a black leather trench coat, even during the warmest months of the year.

Darkwood dislikes and distrusts Yote from the beginning, immediately knowing that Yote is an outsider coming in from Kenborne. It causes Darkwood to single out and pursue Yote, who has no idea why this “lunatic of a woman” is after her.

As for Darkwood’s intentions? They’re murky. Besides using subtle phrases, she doesn’t elaborate why she’s so interested in Yote.

Darkwood goes as far as to borderline harass Yote, showing up at random times, recording her, and sending “evidence” of Yote’s supposed “wrongdoings” to defense contractors all over the region, including Ukko Sharpe’s company, Sharpe Defense.

Still, given Darkwood’s reputation, most in town write her off as insane. They even imply it to Yote, but it doesn’t keep her from looking over her shoulder.

Inspiration for Cassara Darkwood

The Arcane Prophecy by TC MartiI needed to forge in a Severus Snape-like character. One at instant odds with the protagonist the second they laid eyes on her. Considering Darkwood’s demeanor and, to an extent, her appearance, she represents that.

But like Snape, there’s more to Darkwood than meets the eye. The woman may be friendless, bitter, and antagonizing just for the sake of antagonizing. But she holds a disturbing secret. One that she can’t trust Yote with.

You won’t meet Darkwood until you’re quite a few chapters into The Arcane Prophecy. But Darkwood’s secret is exposed in the first three chapters. Take a look at that sample and see if you can connect the dots.
